En th\u00e9orie c’est un roman d’espionnage<\/strong>. Ce qui n’est pas compl\u00e8tement faux. \u00adSerena Frome, prononcez \u00ab Frume \u00bb comme dans \u00ab plume \u00bb est une jeune et belle Anglaise des ann\u00e9es soixante-dix. Provinciale, elle est ravie d’\u00e9chapper \u00e0 ses parents. On la comprend car son p\u00e8re est \u00e9v\u00eaque anglican. Pas de quoi se poiler tous les jours. Plut\u00f4t attir\u00e9e par la litt\u00e9rature, elle c\u00e8de \u00e0 l’injonction parentale d’aller \u00e9tudier les math\u00e9matiques \u00e0 Cambridge ce qui lui assurerait un brillant avenir. Serena sue sang et eau pour obtenir sa licence. Sans mention. Elle agr\u00e9mente heureusement son quotidien de rencontres plus jubilatoires, jusqu’\u00e0 \u00ab perdre sa virginit\u00e9 plusieurs fois<\/em> \u00bb. C’est dire si elle est peu dou\u00e9e en math\u00e9matiques. Elle \u00e9veille aussi sa conscience politique en lisant L’Archipel du Goulag <\/em>de Soljenitsyne. Serena tombe amoureuse de Tony Canning un professeur la cinquantaine bien tass\u00e9e. Entre deux s\u00e9jours \u00e0 la campagne, Tony lui fait d\u00e9couvrir de nombreux auteurs, l’incite \u00e0 lire Le Times<\/em>, lui enseigne les subtilit\u00e9s de la cuisine italienne et bien d’autres choses plus intimes. Tony va surtout la diriger vers le MI5, le service de renseignement responsable de la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 int\u00e9rieure du Royaume-Uni. Le travail de Serena n’est pas pour autant passionnant. Elle est une simple secr\u00e9taire, comme toutes femmes du service. Telle est la mani\u00e8re dont con\u00e7oit le partage des t\u00e2ches dans la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 britannique de l’\u00e9poque. Avec sa modeste paye, elle partage une vieille maison londonienne en compagnie de trois jeunes femmes qui terminent leurs \u00e9tudes d’avocate. Heureusement survient l’op\u00e9ration Sweet Tooth qui va changer la vie de Serena. Pas la mer \u00e0 boire quand m\u00eame. Il s’agit de financer un jeune romancier prometteur, susceptible de promouvoir la parole antisovi\u00e9tique sans qu’il ne d\u00e9couvre jamais d’o\u00f9 vient l’argent. L’heureux \u00e9lu, Tom Haley, r\u00e9side \u00e0 Brighton. Serena en tombe rapidement amoureuse. Ils passent tous les week-end ensemble autour d’une bouteille de chablis avant de se r\u00e9fugier au lit. Buvez, \u00e9liminez ! Alors un roman d’espionnage ?
