Ella Fay fait partie de cette derni\u00e8re cat\u00e9gorie. \u00c0 vingt ans, elle a d\u00e9j\u00e0 pass\u00e9 dix ann\u00e9es dans une filature quand elle brise une vitre pour dire son refus de ses conditions de travail, de son air irrespirable, des poussi\u00e8res en suspension, des ordres des contrema\u00eetres. Tout cela pour un salaire de mis\u00e8re dont la moiti\u00e9 sera pr\u00e9empt\u00e9e par son p\u00e8re, avant de passer  dans les poches de son mari, qui ne sera pas pour autant avare en coups. Sa m\u00e8re pourrait en t\u00e9moigner. John Mulligan est Irlandais. Il a trouv\u00e9 dans l&rsquo;hospice un lieu de refuge quand rien n&rsquo;allait plus chez lui apr\u00e8s la mort de sa petite fille et le d\u00e9part de sa femme. Mais si l&rsquo;on peut rentrer volontairement \u00e0 Sharston, on en sort que sur accord de ceux qui g\u00e8rent l&rsquo;hospice. Autant dire que les plus nombreux finissent \u00e0 la fosse commune. La vie est dure pour ceux que l&rsquo;on souhaiterait qualifier de patients. Ella Fay travaille dans l&rsquo;\u00e9tuve de la buanderie et John aux champs. Le jeune m\u00e9decin Charles Fuller est le troisi\u00e8me protagoniste du roman. Musicien, il a instaur\u00e9 un bal hebdomadaire chaque vendredi o\u00f9 sont convi\u00e9s les malades de Sharston, du moins quand ils se sont bien comport\u00e9s. Le livre vaut beaucoup pour la pr\u00e9sentation de l&rsquo;eug\u00e9nisme que tente d&rsquo;instaurer Fuller. L&rsquo;\u00e9pisode est r\u00e9el, puisque Winston Churchill pr\u00f4na avant la Premi\u00e8re guerre mondiale la st\u00e9rilisation pour am\u00e9liorer la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 anglaise. Que le symbole de la r\u00e9sistance aux Nazis f\u00fbt celui qui d\u00e9fendit leurs th\u00e9ories ne manque pas d&rsquo;\u00e9tonner. L&rsquo;histoire est pourtant r\u00e9elle car Churchill et les eug\u00e9nistes y voyaient un moyen de se d\u00e9barrasser non seulement des malades mentaux mais aussi des indigents per\u00e7us comme une charge pour la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 britannique.
