On retrouve vingt ann\u00e9es plus tard<\/strong> Benjamin, Philip et Doug toujours aussi proches. Toujours \u00e0 Birmingham. Doug Anderton est devenu journaliste politique. Philip s’est mari\u00e9 avec Claire. Ils ont eu un fils Patrick, ont divorc\u00e9, mais sont rest\u00e9s en bons termes. Benjamin esp\u00e8re encore retrouver Cicely qu’il a perdue de vue depuis bien longtemps, m\u00eame s’il a \u00e9pous\u00e9 Emily avec qui il ne partage pas grand-chose d’autre que la fr\u00e9quentation des \u00e9glises. Le roman commence avec le retour de Claire d’Italie o\u00f9 elle a tent\u00e9 de reconstruire sa vie en Toscane. Mais son union avec Stefano n’\u00e9tait pas viable. Claire ne d\u00e9sesp\u00e8re pas de comprendre ce qu’est devenue sa s\u0153ur Miriam disparue il y a bien longtemps. Elle y parviendra \u00e0 fin du livre. Cette suite de Bienvenue au club<\/em> accorde une large place \u00e0 Paul Trotter, le jeune fr\u00e8re de Benjamin, d\u00e9j\u00e0 t\u00eate \u00e0 claques dans la premi\u00e8re partie du diptyque. Paul est d\u00e9sormais un d\u00e9put\u00e9 ambitieux \u00e9lu dans le sillon de Tony Blair, pr\u00eat \u00e0 tout pour asseoir son autorit\u00e9 au sein du New Labour.<\/em> Paul tombe amoureux d’une brillante \u00e9tudiante en communication qu’il pique \u00e0 son fr\u00e8re. Une fr\u00e9quentation dangereuse dans un pays o\u00f9 la presse ne recule devant rien pour vendre du papier. Mais comment s’en s\u00e9parer alors qu’elle fait de lui un des d\u00e9put\u00e9s les plus prometteurs. Qu’elle parvient \u00e0 le faire inviter dans des \u00e9missions de t\u00e9l\u00e9vision \u00e0 forte audience. Et surtout qu’elle devient son obsession sexuelle d’autant plus accessible que sa femme vit loin de Londres. Un temps rachet\u00e9e par BMW, l’usine British Leyland doit fermer. Elle conna\u00eet son ultime conflit social, une occasion comme une autre pour r\u00e9unir la plupart des personnages. Doug couvre le conflit, au moins autant par fid\u00e9lit\u00e9 \u00e0 son p\u00e8re qui fut le leader syndical de l’\u00e9tablissement, que par int\u00e9r\u00eat professionnel. Chez les Trotter, la survie de la vieille industrie int\u00e9resse mod\u00e9r\u00e9ment la famille. Benjamin plane dans son monde. Paul n’a en r\u00e9alit\u00e9 aucune app\u00e9tence pour ces ouvriers mais il doit quand m\u00eame se positionner comme d\u00e9put\u00e9. Or les temps ont chang\u00e9. Le Blayrisme soutient le march\u00e9, la modernit\u00e9, le lib\u00e9ralisme et n’accorde aucun espoir aux secteurs \u00e9conomiques en difficult\u00e9. Autant dire que la fermeture du site est acquise. Paul doit d’ailleurs r\u00e9pondre \u00e0 une question infiniment plus importante : doit-il soutenir l’intervention anglaise en Irak comme le pr\u00f4ne Tony Blair ? Paul pense avoir trouv\u00e9 une r\u00e9ponse en faisant appel \u00e0 un dirigeant de BMW \u00e0 qui il a sauv\u00e9 la vie lors d’anciennes vacances. Comme si les financiers allemands avaient plus de compassion que ceux de Grande-Bretagne. Tout aussi attachant que Bienvenue au club<\/em>, tout aussi dr\u00f4le, Le cercle ferm\u00e9 <\/em>est plus d\u00e9senchant\u00e9 que le premier volume. Sans doute parce que les personnages ont en partie leur avenir derri\u00e8re eux. Que l’on se rassure quand m\u00eame.
